Sequel Confirmed for Fantastic Beasts

Harry Potter prequel and spinoff Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them follows Newt Scamander, a wizard who accidentally loses track of some magical creatures while he is traveling in 1920s New York City. While most fans were aware of a plan to make Fantastic Beasts into a trilogy series, a sequel has finally been officially confirmed by Warner Brothers Pictures. Both movies will be directed by David Yates, who also directed the final four Harry Potter films.

The first film, which will be released on November 18 of this year, stars Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne as magizoologist Scamander who has both whimsical and dark adventures. The second installment, the script for which J.K. Rowling has already finished, focuses on “an increasingly dark time in the wizarding world” and takes the light-hearted tone of Scamander’s story in a “whole new direction.” Fantastic Beasts 2 will hit theaters on November 16, 2018.

While some may doubt the studio’s choice to produce a sequel to a movie that hasn’t even been released yet, many factors prove that they will make money. The hype surrounding the first Fantastic Beasts on social media and at Comic Con coupled with the fact that the screenplay for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child sold 2 million copies in 2 days are proof that Harry Potter fans crave more new material than ever.
