The Star Wars franchise is hotter than ever. Episode VII brought in record returns, and the spin-off Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is still selling tickets. Disney isn’t going to let this moneymaker stop producing.
Although the original series may have only two more episodes left, Disney is busy dreaming up new directions for the universe. Rumors are flying about a potential Han Solo film. The lovable rogue is one of the most iconic characters of all time. Reviewers couldn’t stop praising the reappearance of the Millennium Falcon in Episode VII, and it’s likely Disney is counting on the tide of nostalgia to carry a Han Solo flick to box office gold.
The movie still doesn’t have a title, but it’s already cast several stars. Alden Ehrenreich, who has already worked with Woody Allen, Francis Ford Coppola and the Coen Brothers, will take the lead role. Donald Glover will take on a young Lando Calrissian. Game of Thrones megastar Emilia Clarke has been cast in an unnamed role, but many insiders assume she’ll be playing the female lead. Khaleesi wouldn’t settle for a minor part.
The movie is already securing rights to shoot on the Spanish Canary Islands and Italy. Few specifics are known, but the island, Fuerteventura, is home to lava-strewn hills and volcanic mountains. It could make an exotic backdrop for a foreign planet. Its hard-to-reach location will make it harder for spoilers and photos to leak online.
The movie is set for release in 2018, so producers must be eager to get the ball rolling. As with most Star Wars movie, the Han Solo flick is sure to need plenty of special effects. Post-production can take months, so there’s not much time left.
