The second and final trailer for Disney’s upcoming Star Wars spinoff, “Star Wars: Rogue One” has hit the web with much fanfare.
It’s the first film in the Star Wars franchise to move away from the original story of Luke Skywalker and his exploits. The plot follows a group of rebels led by Jyn Orso (played by Felicity Jones) to steal construction plans for the Empire’s secret weapon, the Death Star. “Rogue One” takes place just prior to the events of the original movie, “A New Hope.”
The new trailer reveals some deeper plot points and takes a closer look at Jyn Orso, showing flashbacks from her childhood. We see that Jyn’s father has some level of involvement with the Empire and the construction of the Death Star.
From there momentum builds, contrasting the frightening and overwhelming power of the Empire with the hope and dogged perseverance of an unlikely, rag-tag group of rebels that are determined to succeed. The trailer is full of action, beautiful cinematography, and of course an ominous appearance from the iconic villain, Darth Vader.
Disney CEO Bob Iger has deemed Rogue One to be “an experiment.” It seems like the film is building hard on the concept of hope amongst the vastly outnumbered rebels and is setting itself up as a promising spinoff prequel to the original trilogy. If this trailer is any indication, their experiment could prove to be an overwhelmingly positive success.
Rogue One is due in theaters December 16th, 2016. It’s directed by Gareth Edwards and stars Felicity Jones, Mads Mikkelsen, and Riz Amhed.
