The amount of remakes and reboots that have suddenly taken over movie theaters is ridiculous. Nobody wants another Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Fantastic Four movie! However, for every nine awful remake ideas, there’s also one gem; an idea that I am sure makes Hollywood executives slap their heads while exclaiming “Why didn’t I think of that!?” One of those ideas was just announced recently, and it’s a great one: Channing Tatum as a merman in a remake of the Tom Hanks and Darryl Hannah movie Splash.
First, let’s just get this out of the way: he won’t be playing a mermaid. If we’ve learned one thing from Derek Zoolander, it’s that a male mermaid doesn’t exist. It’s a merman. Secondly, if Tatum is going to be playing the Darryl Hannah role, then it’s crucial that producers find a female co-star who can be as affable and charming as Tom Hanks was in the original. Personally, I would go with someone like Ellie Kemper or Anna Kendrick. Either of them would be perfect for the role.
I’m sure Tatum’s merman outfit will be cut low enough to show off his bod, something that he probably has written into every contract he signs. That’s probably the reason why he was offered the role. I have a hard time believing anyone would want to see a shirtless Danny McBride try to be a merman. On second thought, that might just be an even better idea than Tatum!
