The Predator Hunts Again

Who would have thought 1987’s Predator would end up a continuing franchise even after 30 years? Even the biggest fans of the first film who sat enthralled in theaters watching the fantasy-action film play out never thought a new film would be planned for 2018. The new film, titled The Predator, has the potential to be a big hit since Shane Black of Lethal Weapon fame is writing and directing the new entry. Black’s most recent hit was Iron Man 3, a solid entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Shane Black has to craft a truly solid film since 2010’s Predators was not exactly a major favorite. The film is somewhat forgettable. So was Predator 2. Even Alien vs. Predator was just “okay”.

Is Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem even remembered much after all? With so many mediocre films, how has the Predator franchise survived? The films did make money. The receipts might not have been massive, but they were good enough. And Predator video games have made a fortune. Even if a new movie only does “okay” box office, the new film will be worth the investment if a video game tie-in is a megahit.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem pulled in over $120 million at the worldwide box office on a $40 million budget. The Predator surely will pull in at least $100 million worldwide. The possibility also exists that the new film will land at the right time for a reboot and earn way more than $100 million worldwide.

The Predator could be deemed a safe new entry on a movie studio’s slate. Consider the film franchise to be a conservative investment of sorts. A total dud is not likely. A huge hit is a possibility. The Predator franchise has its fans — a lot of them. The studio and Shane Black are counting on them to show up when the new movie rolls into theaters.
