In movie news, singer and actress Lady Gaga will be playing the lead role in the upcoming remake of the classic film “A Star is Born.” The original movie came out in 1937 and has been redone twice since then; the upcoming version will be directed by actor Bradley Cooper in his first major project as a director and produced by Warner Brothers. Clint Eastwood intended to direct the film, but his participation fell through, and Cooper, who was committed as an actor in the project, stepped up into the director’s chair.
Personally, I think this is great news and an excellent career move for Lady Gaga, who has played bit parts in a number of films but has never had a lead onscreen role. Because the film has done well before commercially, there is every reason to believe that it will again. Furthermore, Gaga will be writing songs for the film. If she can come up with some catchy numbers, they will give this reboot a contemporary feel and also showcase her considerable and proven musical talents.
While it can be argued that acting in a remake with a track record of success is playing it safe, I think it’s fine for Gaga to take this role. She’s always walked a fine line between mainstream and edgy, and her most recent musical offerings in particular have been a little too much on the alternative side of the artistic spectrum as far as I’m concerned. Gaga is still young and developing creatively, and I feel that this film is just what she needs to become highly accomplished as an actress. Her career has been in a bit of a lull in recent years, and hopefully this project will remedy this.
