“Green Lantern” Film Not Extinguished Yet

Green Lantern Corps is “still in the works,” according to David S. Goyer, who is co-writing the DC Extended Universe film.

Goyer, who worked on Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, made these comments during the winter press tour of the Television Critics Association, where he was promoting his upcoming series Krypton.

Plans for a Green Lantern movie were first announced in October 2014, with the title provided the following summer. It will be unrelated to the 2011 film which starred Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, as that movie (the first attempt DC Comics made to make a cinematic universe like rival Marvel) did not meet studio expectations.

The title implies that there will be multiple Green Lantern protagonists. In the comic, the Green Lanterns are a group of space cops, and several humans hold the title simultaneously. It is unknown which will appear in the film, though speculation focuses on Hal Jordan, John Stewart and Guy Gardener.

An alien Green Lantern was briefly seen in Justice League, helping to defend the Earth from Steppenwolf; that film implies a longstanding conflict between them and the evil New Gods of planet Apokolips.

Goyer also acknowledged that fans are justified in being unsure, as the status of different DCEU projects can easily become confusing. Indeed, Warner Bros. has announced somewhere around twenty different films, only for many to get put on the back-burner, never be mentioned again or be fundamentally altered as time goes on. So far, only five films have been released, with three more (Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2) set for release in the next two years. Green Lantern Corps is tentatively set for 2020.
