Actress Sigourney Weaver has been discussing the planned “Alien 5” film. The sequel, which does not have a release date yet, will once again feature Weaver’s character battling hostile aliens. Because it’s the 30th anniversary of the original “Aliens” film, there is a good buzz about the entire franchise in general.
“Alien 5” will be directed by Neill Blomkamp rather than by Cameron Scott, who directed the original film. However, “Alien 5” will be a direct sequel to “Aliens,” and this means that the plot lines of the Alien films in between will be ignored, freeing up the screenwriters to take story lines in multiple directions. For example, characters killed off in other sequels are likely to be living again in this new film.
It’s interesting to consider film sequels in general. Studios that produce sequels of popular films walk a fine line between satisfying consumer demand for a strong scenario and group of characters and making it appear as if they’re just trying to cash in by rehashing. In my opinion, the Tobey Maguire “Spiderman” series of films were excellent at giving fans the characters they wanted to see again while keeping the franchise fresh throughout.
I’m hoping that the makers of “Alien 5” will be able to accomplish the same thing because the original Alien was a fantastic picture. Having Sigourney Weaver playing her iconic character once again should help.
